TED Fellowships Programme 2019

TED Fellowships Programme 2019

TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment, and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

The TED Fellows program is turning ten years old next year, and looking for the most ambitious class yet. The program will select people from every discipline and every country to be Fellows, and give them support to scale their dreams and scale their impact.

How it works

Every year, through a rigorous open application process, TED selects a group of rising stars to be TED Fellows. We choose Fellows based on remarkable achievement, their strength of character and on their innovative approach to solving the world’s tough problems. Fellows are invited to attend a TED conference, where they meet, exchange ideas and connect with the larger TED community. They also give their own TED Talk – an unprecedented opportunity to disseminate their unique ideas to the world.

Selection process

We read every application, and therefore the review process takes time. You can expect to hear back from us within 6 to 7 months after the application closes. From each applicant pool, we accept 20 Fellows to attend the conference. All applicants are notified of whether or not they have been selected to join the TED Fellows program.

  • Open to on doers, makers, inventors, advocates, filmmakers and photographers, musicians and artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, NGO heads, and human rights activists;
  • All applicants must be 18 years or older by the time they apply;
  • In addition to impressive accomplishment, fine character and a good heart are two very important traits they look for in an every potential TED Fellow. More than anything, this focus on character  has defined the success of the TED Fellows program;
  • Fellows are individuals with original work, a record of achievement in their field and exceptional potential. They are also courageous, collaborative people dedicated to improving life where they work;
  • They are looking for individuals from all disciplines, and who have collaborative, kind personalities.

Application requirements

**All applicants must be 18 years or older by the time they apply.

**Once selected as a Fellow, you must be available to speak with the TED Fellows team via videoconference for approximately ten hours (over the course of approximately three months) prior to the TED conference.
The central requirement of the TED Fellowship is that you are available to attend the TED conference in person, for the entire time. In addition to the main five days of the TED conference, all Fellows must participate in a three-day pre-conference. This means you will be required to block off a total of eight consecutive days in your schedule.

**TED conference is conducted in English, English proficiency is a requirement. However, we do not require applicants to be native English speakers. Many do, in fact, have other native languages.

**No costs of transportation to and from the TED conference, any visa you may need, accommodations and food while at the conference and conference registration.

**Applicants selected to be TED Fellows are responsible for applying for their own visas. However, we do provide a formal letter of invitation that should be sufficient for most countries' visa processes. While we do our best to help each Fellow, we cannot be responsible if a visa is denied. We do cover visa application fees.
